Michael Brunskill and Marianna Pasteris acted for the director of Alternative Mortgages Ltd in a very large and complex mortgage fraud.
Operation Valgus was an investigation into over 800 separate mortgages and crystalised losses in excess of £8 million. Mr McMeekin ran a mortgage brokerage firm that was caught up in the investigation and he was accused of being a knowing party to the fraud.
Full preparations were made for trial however it became clear that negotiations could be conducted that would sufficiently limit the case to ensure a non custodial sentence for Mr McMeekin. It was eventually agreed that the indictment be amended to reflect a less serious offence and on that basis Mr McMeekin entered a guilty plea. He was subsequently given a Community Order involving 50 hours of unpaid work.
